In this dark comedy horror feature film, a seemingly innocent girl-next-door is obsessed with her mother's collection of vintage fashion magazines and 1980s music video VHS tapes.… Oh, and also murder.
We and the director aimed for an often otherworldly feel to evoke the hyper-glossy media Ella so deeply loves, and so desperately hopes will help her connect with her cold, rejecting mother.
Great care was taken to make many of the real locations look like unrealistic studio sets, with some of the outdoor backgrounds resembling matte paintings rather than real places.
As a result, the murders appear like blissful and possibly imaginary ballets rather than grim realities with real consequences. We are left to wonder what is real and what is merely her fantasy world, as she becomes increasingly unhinged.
